HISTORY OF ROULETTE

Roulette is one of the most famous casino games, the word Roulette deriving from the French word meaning ‘Little wheel’.

In the game, players may choose to place their bet on either the colours red or black; or on odd or even; or on any number between 0 and 36. To determine the winning number and colour, the wheel is spun in one direction and a ball in the opposite direction around a circular track which runs around the circumference of the wheel.

As the ball loses its momentum it falls onto the spinning wheel and eventually stops in one of the 37 numbered segments spaced around the wheel. If you have placed your money as a bet that is satisfied by the resulting number then you are a winner!

The first form of Roulette was invented in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, a French scientist, inventor and mathematician. The fact that a game of ‘chance’ based on probabilities and statistics was invented by a mathematician is not, we believe, coincidental.

Mathematics behind Roulette

The Roulette wheel segments are numbered, in a seemingly random pattern, from 0 to 36 (An American Roulette wheel is laid out differently and also has an extra double zero (00) segment but EQuilette has been designed to operate on ANY wheel, including American – just Contact Us and ask for American EQuilette details)

In the ranges 1 to 10 and 19 to 28, odd numbers are red and even ones black. In the ranges 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, odd numbers are black and even are red. There is also a green segment (0 or zero).

For a standard 37 segment Roulette wheel the chances of a ball landing in any one segment = 1/37

So if a bet is placed on red, there are 18 red numbers the chances of a ball landing on ANY red number =18/37

The casino’s payout on any bet is only calculated using 36 numbers, the payout being defined as 36/p where p is the number of possible winning bets. So for a bet on red there are 18 possible outcomes (p=18) so the casino payout is 36/18

Thus the player wins 2 times their bet.

The average return to a player on a standard wheel is 36/37 which being lower than 1 means on average the casino will ALWAYS win.

So the casino (house) believes it has the edge and will always come out on top and, up until now it was right, but now, thanks to EQuilette, the edge has swung in your favour.
